I was just thinking of something when looking through the polls. There is a chance that we could see a filibuster-proof senate, with 60 democrat seats if the election swings completely away from the Reps. Frankly, there are probably some very good Republican Senators who are in jeopardy of losing their seats because of McCain and current events, and it is a bit of a shame. However, I realized something. If Obama is elected, the same problem will exist, which is that the senate and the house can get in the way of change. With a filibuster-proof senate however, that becomes less of a problem. So here is my thought.
If you want to see change, any change at all, regardless of what it is, you might want to consider voting for your democrat senator if you are voting for Obama. Obviously, i’m not talking to the party Republicans, but instead I am speaking to the independents who are voting for Obama, but are also voting for a Republican senator. I understand your reasons, you want what is best for you and yours, and you are choosing who you feel is the best candidate in each race.
My argument is that if you are voting for Obama, because you think he will best be able to benefit this country, or change the way things are, or invoke new energy policy and research, etc, etc, etc, you may be hindering his ability to do that, by voting cross lines. I get it though, I really do. But consider the things he wants to do. Some of them have less of a chance of happening with each Republican in the Senate, because that brings them that much closer to being able to filibuster. I am not suggesting you sell your soul, or your ideals. But, I am suggesting that if you are only leaning to the right in your senate race, might you pick up a beer with your left hand, so you can tip left? If it’s just a minor difference in your choice, I would suggest you chose Democrat, so we can find out if these changes that have been talked about for SOOOOOO many years. Such as the changes to healthcare, and education, will they work and be what we all “hope” they can be? The only way to probably find out is with a Democrat senate.
