Optical discs: now made out of rocks

 

The flaw with optical storage that people don’t generally realize is that it isn’t going to last forever. I already have archive DVDs from over 10 years ago that no longer are readable. Heat, light, bending, etc are all enemies of optical disks. Well, LG apparently has create a new media that is literally made of rocks, and is now rock-solid… <rimshot>

Slow write speed, by actually etching the substrate, but the end result is a really long term storage solution, which is readable on standard DVD drives. Their tagline is “write once, read forever”, which an astute commenter points out is very trekky. WORF drive… LOL
