The consumerist, although often pointing out some cool, interesting, and weird product stuff, seems to have missed the mark on this. These bottles of water are made out of Corn byproducts and water. They are SUPPOSED to degrade in the sun. When they are full of water they are fine, but when they are almost empty, like the bottles in the photo are, they begin to shrink.
The complaint is that if you leave you bottle in your hot car, then you might come back to a mess. First off, if you are going to leave your bottle in a hot enough car, long enough, for the corn plastic to shrink, then you are probably not going to drink that water. So... bring the bottle with you when you get out, and throw the damn thing out. Don't wait until you have a full science experiment going in there, like you would with a normal bottle apparently.
I can see the potential problem, but then again, I have had a soda bottle explode in my car, so water doesn't seem like much of a threat. The ironic part is that if your water bottle burst, and water went everywhere, because of the heat, wouldn't it be a self correcting problem? THE HEAT WILL EVAPORATE THE SPILLED WATER.
This is a very small price to pay for non-petrolium based plastic.
