I am handing down my iPhone 2g to my mom. I just tried to activate it for her phone number, which is under a family plan I control. iTunes would not let me deselect the dataplan, told me I was going to be put onto another 2 year contract, and then asked for my Credit Card at which point the little X got clicked and iTunes went bye bye.
This is a USED phone, over 2 years old, a few months out of contract. WTF?
So I realize iTunes might not exactly be capable of dealing with this situation, but it cannot be unique by any stretch. Its not like I am trying to use it on another network or do something outside of the EULA. I should have known better than to listen to the guy at the ATT store who said “all you do is activate it in iTunes, just like the first time you got it.” jackass.
So now we will see if the store can handle it. I am not holding my breath. My guess is that I will end up having to jail break it for my mom to use it, which yet again, is apple forcing people to do “illegal” things just to use their stuff even when they own it. Yes prior to completing the contract, I would agree that they own the phone and can enforce arbitrary rules, but they no longer own it because the agreement has been completed, I do and technically now my mom does.

Nice to see you back in action as well BD ...
@ AT&T guy: those guys are even worse than so many of the “geniuses” at the apple store. Amazing.
Have you thought about going to an Apple store to do it? If you’d like to, I can hook you up with the business account boys, that are WAY different than the floor folks and can get pretty amazing things done. Let me know.
