Ikea is going to flatpack solar panels

August 07, 2008 by: dave

At least eventually it sounds like Ikea is going to start selling solar panels. WOAH. They just begun investing a bankroll of 50 million Euros into clean technology startups with the specific goal of eventually selling solar panels, smart meters and other clean/green technology.

This is awesome news. Ikea is like a non-evil version of Walmart. When they want to do something, they just do it, and seemingly always succeed. They are VERY green minded, always worrying about how to reduce environmental impact as much as they can, and encouraging environtmental technologies and products.

Ikea GreenTech is going to focus on five areas of interest. Solar panels, alternative light sources, product materials, energy efficiency, and water saving and purification. The group said the investments will be made in companies that offer commercial prospects within a four to five year horizon. The plan is to invest in 5-10 companies and take a very active roll on the board's of those companies. The goal is to offer commercial products withing 4-5 years.

I am excited to see what they churn out. The company overall is amazing. 270 stores in 35 countries, which doesn't seem like that many, yet they service over half a billion customers each year. wow. That's 1.85 million per store on average. Compare that to Walmart's 5.2 billion a year at 3400 stores, which is 1.5 million per store. IKEA FTW!

You’re spot on, this is REALLY great news. PinkHat and I were just lamenting the other day, that we really don’t even know where to go to talk to people about solar alternatives for our home, and that would make a great starting place. It will also put pressure on the rest of the market do the same.

Funny you posted this, I’ve a post at my spot that is interestingly parallel. Hope to have it out tomorrow.
