If you have been waiting for a solution that allows you to sync your iPhone over-the-air with Google Calendar and Google Contacts in Gmail, you now have a free, EASY AS HELL solution.
I run windows, which means that up until a few minutes ago, I have been running the google calendar sync for a while now, and it works fine except that it obviously only syncs when I plug in my iPhone, it's yet another application running in the background, and it required outlook to be installed because outlook was what you needed to use to sync with itunes. Up until the 2.0 version of iPhone, contacts couldn't sync, but now of course they can, so the only downside was needing to plug in to sync. Not really a big deal of course for contacts.
Well, now there is a new solution, which I really like. Nuevasync.com is an over-the-air sync which will sync to any exchange server capable device, which of course because the iPhone does exchange, yeay! Nothing to install on your phone either. It will only currently sync gmail calendar (or google apps calendar) with the iPhone, but it will sync either Google Contacts or Plaxo contacts. Setup was easy as hell. You just sign up, confirm your email address, and then log in. Once you are in, you need to setup each item, calendar and contacts, to authorize access to your accounts at google via the new google API. Fairly idiot proof, its just entering your googleID which is your email address there, and click a few times, and viola, your done.
Setup on the iPhone was also monkey simple.
I did a quick test to make sure it all worked. Added a test appointment to my google calendar, and a few seconds later, boom! it was on the iPhone, over the air. Then i deleted the appointment from the phone, and with a refresh of google calendar, it was gone there. YEAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two way calendar sync.
Now for the windows folks this in not that big of a deal probably because of Google Calendar Sync, but the Mac folks can now rejoice because they have only had 1 way sync via iCal, pulling from google down to the iPhone only. Of course both have two way contact sync via iTunes with the 2.0 release on iPhone, but now, no more issues.
Currently it's free and in Beta, but frankly i'd pay for it, assuming it was cheap like $10/year. Apparently the company that created it is using it as a testbed for a protocol they are developing, and will probably have some big beefy version for pay. But hell, this alone might be a business. Check it out if you have an iPhone or even a windows mobile device and want to sync with google calendar or google contacts or plaxo contacts.

Hi - this may be a redundant question. Does the nuevasync software support the Blackberry interface? I don’t have the Blackberry Enterprise Service yet and I wonder if it will be helpful to subscribe. I can’t find the blackberry quesion on the nuevasync website.
Any suggestions?
Jennifer

unfortunately I dont think so. Blackberry uses a proprietary system from what I understand, though I could be completely wrong.
It couldnt hurt to try though, since after all, it is free.
If you have a way to setup a connection to exchange server within blackberry, try it. cant hurt imo.

Where did it go? It’s not in the app store and the link you provided looks like it’s down.

hey matt, there is no actual app for the iphone, it just uses the built in exchange server capabilities to provide contact list syncing. By the way, now plaxo is implemented as well, though it is currently down due to some issue on Plaxo’s end.
Both links on this page work, it must have just been a temporary clogging of the tubes.

Dave,
Thanks. I figured it out a few minutes after my post and am now happily syncing. It’s really great. Do you have a favorite way to sync back to Outlook? I don’t use it but it’s the “common hub” for a lot of other tools with nothing other than local Outlook sync.

since I got Google apps to sync everything with my iPhone, I have now tossed outlook, and never looked back.
however, this guy has a $10 solution

not sure what other options there are, except that you may be able to sync through the iphone. since you can sync your iPhone to outlook, and now to gmail via nuevasync, you may be able to do the 3 way sync with the iPhone being your “keystone”.
but in the end, try going without outlook for a few days. The only thing you would be missing is a todo list, in which case there are about 50000000 of them online. I use rememberthemilk.com which now has a native iPhone App.

Cool. Thanks for the tip. I don’t use Outlook but my wife’s office does because it’s the only thing that their industry-specific management software will sync calendar info with. There are a lot of folks in that same boat. Outlook often becomes the “hub” to share calendar and/or contact info from third-party software.
She uses a Treo so she syncs it with Outlook to get the full round-trip sync going with her management software. We’ve always wanted to be able to share calendars. The gsync option might be the way to go…
Oh, and I use RTM. It’s pretty cool. I’m considering some others, too.
