Partisanship is a two way street

September 29, 2008 by: dave

So the current news that America is going to hell in a handbasket, and the failure of the house to pass a bailout package, of course results in epic grandstanding and blamestorming. The issue I am having is with a particular thing, partisanship.

I fully understand the problem, but I don't understand why the solution is so hard to grasp. The republicans are claiming that Pelosi gave a last minute partisan speech on the floor, and that is the reason the bill got voted down. The media is still waiting for a transcript of the speech, but lets just assume for the moment it was rediculously partisan, though I doubt it. Is that the reason the republicans didn't vote for it? Is that what they are honestly claiming?

Understand what that acutally means. The republicans played the role of whiney cry baby poopy pants, and voted against, just because another kid called them names. WOW. So in otherwords, that means the republicans are taking this so seriously, that they can get derailed by commentary? The republicans are taking it so seriously, that they voted down just to spite the dems? That's what they are implying by their actions and complaints in the press conference right after.

Look, even if Pelosi came out and said that their mothers are fat and smell like shit, it should not matter. In this situation, you vote for something good enough, not perfect, and not self serving.

So since I assume most people rep or dem, can see that a childish response, even in response to a childish act if that was the case, is not acceptible in dire times. Should not the reps have risen to the occasion and voted yes, and then after could have played up the fact that they took the high road, and voted for the good of America, regardless of the partisan things supposedly said by Pelosi? It seems like the correct action to me in that possible scenario.

However, it is obvious what happened. The reps could not reach a majority, and Pelosi gave them a scape goat oppertunity. I think it's obvious when the reps come out and just immediately start pointing the finger at Pelosi. If it was a vote down because they disagreed with the package on a fundamental level, then I would support that. But it wasn't that, because if it was, they would have come out and said that, instead of whiney cry baby poopy pants like they did.

Meanwhile, my goddam apple shares are down 30%+
