While watching the Debate, I saw a lot of the usual McCain-troll-i-hate-you style contempt look on his face that I have come to expect. The thing is however that I noticed something specific, and some of the media seems to be picking up on it.
At no point did McCain even look at Obama. Obama looked at McCain many times, but McCain never looked at Obama. There is a bit of conversation going on now about whether this is contempt, or self righteousness, or something worse. Does McCain think that Obama has no right to be there? Does he think that he is being "put out" by having to debate? Does he feel like he doesn't need to explain his positions?
I thought this through most of the debate, jumping around, but mostly getting the feeling of contempt and anger. But then, it dawned on me.
He was afraid.
There was a reason in college that I didn't look women in the eye for a few years, because I was terrified of them (i got over it obviously). There is a reason why a submissive animal, like a low ranking wolf will not look at the Alpha, and the same behavior exists in most primates as well. It's because of knowing your place in the hierarchy, and fear, that they superior will take your look as a sign of aggression.
Of course I don't mean that McCain is afraid of Obama in a physical sense (at least I assume not), but that he is afraid of him nevertheless. You don't look the guy in the eye who is pointing a gun at you because you don't want to piss him off and cause him to shoot you, though the reality is that looking him in the eye might be the thing that saves you sometimes. It's a subconscious thing, you generally can't control it. If you feel like the person you are speaking with is vastly superior to you, in an important situation, you are going to bow down before them, by not making eye contact.
It happens in business all the time. I get it when I meet with a client and there is a "technical guy" in the meeting. Often he will not make eye contact, and I immediately know the situation, which is, the guy doesn't know shit about what he is supposed to be doing in his job. On the flipside, if the guy makes eye contact, looking right at me when I speak, I know that I can start talking up in level detail and technospeak, because he is able to follow, or at least knows his business, and will probably be comfortable asking questions when I mention something unknown to him.
That was what it felt like. I put myself in Obama's shoes and realized that I was in a meeting with one of those "technical guys" who doesn't know anything and is terrified I will expose his lack of knowledge to his boss. The usual result is an employee that lashes out, claims that I am an idiot, wrong, ignorant, whatever, because they are trying to defend themselves, ironically against a threat that isn't there. As a side note, I would always go to bat for an existing employee, as long as they are will to learn and improve, since it's cheaper for the company to keep trained staff, than to train new staff.
So now, the entire campaign for the past few weeks/months has just open up before my eyes (pun intended). McCain is scared to death of Obama.

hey, good analysis…i am a “technical guy” and i make it a habit of always looking across the room and make eye contact ..this shows that i am confidence… i agree also that perhaps Mccain was intimidated by him…
However,
a friend of mine also said Mccain did not make eye contact because he feels like Obama is not on his level, and wanted to make him feel small, and let the America public feel that Obama has no ‘place’ as president…

REALLY well said Nutballs, very nice analysis. I think you’ve hit on something fundamental here that is a bit too nuanced for the general public, but the essence of it will play subconsciously.
As you certainly know, the reaction today is spun towards a supporters candidate, but there is a real and quizzical pause in the public and media about what, exactly, his utter inability to look at Obama meant - and how the public would take it. Although I don’t think many will get this this similar revelation on their own, I think many sort of “naturally” know that what they saw defined a small and angry beta, barking at a cool and in control alpha.
This post caught me from an angle I did not expect. Both PinkHat and I like it a lot.

In all fairness, McCain was a POW for 5 years. That’s why he didn’t make eye contact.

Oh you’ve GOT To be kidding me. Since he was a POW, he can’t make eye contact with people? This would be contradicted by, say, EVERY SINGLE OTHER CAMPAIGN FUNCTION HE ATTENDS… and frankly, if he can’t make eye contact with an opponent as relatively friendly as Obama, how the HELL will he ever be able to stand in the same room with the likes of Putin or Ackmadinna, Achama, Amachamadinaa, oh whomever he was talking about last night.

LOL @ POW.
He makes eye contact in plenty of other situations. So are you saying that he thinks McCain is a Vietnamese captor, or that he is afraid Obama is going to kill him?
I did think this though, at first, and did give it an honest consideration for a bit before I decided to post. I ran through the possible reasons for it, Native American (nope), blind (nope), can’t turn his head left (nope), POW (nope). I did think, that after those years, the ingrained behavior of not looking your captor in the eye to not provoke them, could be legitimate. However, it isn’t legitimate because he looks everyone on the eye in every single meeting I have ever seen of him.
But judging by your name of Funny Guy, I assume you are actually joking
@perk, thanks. It was really really bugging me during the debate, and I commented on it to J quite a few times, like, “wtf is he doing, he’s not looking at Obama, waddadick!”
@Jeryl. I agree, and is another point i meant to get out but got tired of typing and forgot. There is the “condesending dick” angle, who won’t give you the time of day because you are not worthy of his breath. That also does not bode well for McCain, since there will be times when he will have to deal, 1 on 1, with very small, shitty people, and if he can’t do it in a friendly setting, how will he in a confrontational one?
