Undersea Methane in the Arctic Being Released by Ice Melt

September 26, 2008 by: dave

Methane, which is a 21 times more potent heat trapper than CO2, is being released from underneath the arctic ice sheet as it melts. Concerns are beginning to be raised that this release will cause a runaway effect, increasing the heat more, melting more, releasing more, etc. Most climate scientists agree that a large injection of methane into the atmosphere would cause a runaway effect.

The estimates are all over the place on how much methane may be trapped under the ice sheet, but even the smallest number is freakin huge, 500 billion tons. Thats 500,000,000,000 tons. Ouch. I wonder if Phoenix AZ will become rainforest, or uninhabitable? Maybe we will get a really cool-scary sea monster from 500 million years ago out of this?
